SOR IV Cannulation Course (27/08/2021 & 28/08/2021)

Having cannulated for many years, I was unsure as to the overall benefit of this course. It was a requirement for the company I worked for, as I had only had in-house training previously and had no certification to prove I was able to cannulate. I went into this course with some preconceptions that I am glad to say were misplaced. The course covered a wide range of interesting topics, that although they may not be entirely necessary for the ability to cannulate, they do offer extra insight into how and why we have certain practises. The pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics I found particularly interesting, as it is a subject that I hadn’t covered in many years.

The course was over two days, and entirely online due the covid-19. I had trepidations about sitting and watching a screen for this amount of time, but the tutor was extremely engaging and made efforts to ensure we had sufficient breaks and were comfortable with the pacing. Overall this course was excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone, even those who have already been cannulating for years. There was a small practical component, for which we had to cannulate a rubber arm. This was done separately, and was over relatively quickly, as there were only three people on the course and each of us were already proficient cannulators.

I made a short presentation of some of the highlights of the course to share with colleagues, which was extremely well received. If you are interested you can access the powerpoint here.
